Episode 34: The Viktor Novorski Swing Band

The Viktor Novorski Swing Band played its first official gig for this podcast and packed the 200-plus capacity Main Ballroom at CenterStage. This 30s/40s swing-jazz octet is distinct in that there are three-part harmony female vocals, a la The Andrews Sisters, plus male lead vox from bandleader and rhythm guitarist Garrin Hertel and NO DRUMMER. Hertel and his wife Daini (one of the band's three canaries) took trips to New Orleans and were so enamored with the music that they put together this band. Garrin also is practically single-handedly responsible for bringing Spokane's first New Orleans Jazz Festival, which happens Nov. 16-18 at CenterStage (shameless plug). This second set from the podcast starts with the band's only original song (hey, they've been together for a couple of months, give 'em a break) -- a great song for comic geeks called "The Day Gwen Stacy Died", and continues with some known and lesser-known covers.
