Special Edition: Rocky Votolato

Whenever Rocky Votolato comes to town, it’s an event. Playing in support of Lucero, Votolato has been playing to mostly sold—out houses during this national tour. But on the Northwest leg, Votolato is responsible for the draw. The Big Dipper was sold out for this show, and the crowd definitely thinned after Votolato’s set, which was as earnest and honest as his recorded albums. He played with electric guitar and some accompaniment from Lucero drummer Roy Berry. Not everyone can write a song that holds up so well in such a stripped-down construct, and Votolato was captivating from start to finish. Also impressive: He hung out with fans and signed autographs at the merch booth. He’s very approachable. No rock star here, just an artist who does his best to relate, and succeeds.
