Slice readers sing "Ode to Billie Joe"
Recently, columnist Paul Turner asked readers of the Slice to leave a bit of singing on his voicemail if they recognized a reference to "the third of June" and "Billie Joe McCallister." More than 70 identified those snippets from "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry, a hit song in 1967. We've stitched together some of their efforts to re-create the first verse of the song.
