By adding 4.4 inches to the overall length of the standard-issue RX 350, Toyota makes room for a kid-friendly, power-folding third-row bench. (Lexus)

Lexus's RX 350L crossover adds third-row seating

In 1999, Lexus RX 300 brought the word crossover into America’s automotive lexicon. The upright near-luxury vehicle was based on a sedan’s unibody but looked like a truck-based sport-ute. It rode like a front-wheel-drive sedan, while available all-wheel-drive echoed an SUV’s utility. The distinction was...

Though it’s not the most powerful car in the family sedan segment, the Mazda 6 might be the most athletic. Steering is precise and communicative, the chassis stiff and responsive and braking action firm and linear. (Mazda)

Mazda6: Heads up!

Out in the supermarket parking lot, you’d be hard-pressed to distinguish this year’s Mazda6 from last’s. Changes to its grille, headlights and taillights are so subtle casual observers won’t notice. It’s a different story inside, though, as Mazda fits the 6 with a new dash...

The new engine this year is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four that makes 240 horsepower (23 mpg combined/20 city/27 highway). It joins a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four rated at 185 hp (25/22/29), and a 290-hp 3.3-liter V-6 (21/18/26) .

Seven-passenger models are powered by the V-6; five-seaters get one of the fours. Tow capacity ranges from 2,000-6,000 pounds. (Kia)

Kia Sorento: Filling the gaps

Like a quarterback back seeing gaps in the opponent’s defense, Kia has a knack for finding unexpected openings. Last year, it debuted the K900, a luxury sedan that aims to replicate the full-on luxury experience for thousands less than the (mostly German) competition. This year,...

On the outside, the grille grows larger and bolder. Subtle hood creases and not-so-subtle side-panel character folds retool the old flat-sided look. The cast of the headlights and LED running lights carries a wicket glint. (toyota)

Toyota Camry: Securing its lead

Every five or six years, Toyota trots out a new Camry and, almost without fail, it rockets to the top of the charts. The last all-new Camry landed in 2011. If convention held, the next new Camry wouldn’t have appeared until 2016 or 2017. But...

Acura’s all-new TLX sedan may be the ideal near-luxury car for the Inland Northwest.

It favors subtlety over flash, does its business quietly and gets the job done, fair weather and foul.

And, at $31,890, including transportation, it’s as affordably priced as the segment gets. (Acura)

Acura TLX: Impressive newbie

Styling is more mature this year, though the Sport trim’s chrome accents undercut that effort. Suspension tuning favors comfort over performance and the Sonata confidently soaks up road-surface imperfections, while passing little of the impact into the cabin. (Hyundai)

Hyundai Sonata Sport: What's in a name?

I don’t envy the people who name cars, but I do reserve the right to question their judgment. When I created this month’s review calendar, I scheduled a pair of midsize family sedans back-to-back. Each wore Sport trim badges, which seemed like a fair point...
