There’s been lots of news this morning, from Gov. Butch Otter’s announcement about coming holdbacks on schools to university presidents’ dire warnings about the impact of cuts on Idaho’s higher education. Meanwhile, the joint Economic Outlook & Revenue Assessment Committee continues to meet, taking testimony on the state of Idaho’s economy and how it should impact the state’s budget. You can read my full story on Otter’s announcement here at spokesman.com.

in news from afar that will have major effects in Ada/Canyon, EPA announced this a.m. that they will be promulgating a new ozone rule that will sweep the Treasure Valley into non-compliance with the Clean Air Act. Federal highway dollars are on the line. Maybe now we’ll see some local option mass transit legislation.

Ah yes! I knew it wouldn’t be long before we were back in non-compliance. It’s a given with Canyon County emissions driving the numbers into the sewer. I sincerely do hope we acquire a local option mechanism for a comprehensive mass transit system. Then the City of Boise can implement its broader vision of a trolley line that will silence the short-sighted critics of the Phase 1 plan.
