Otter speaks out against mercury dumping, health-care reform bills

“I will not allow Idaho to become the nation’s dumping ground for its elemental mercury,” Gov. Butch Otter declared in his State of the State message just now, saying he’ll continue his fight against federal moves to bring mercury to Idaho. Then he compared it to congressional health care reform legislation. “There is a similar policy-making sleight-of-hand going on with the federal administration’s efforts to foist the cost of a budget-breaking entitlement program onto our backs,” he said. “Thank you for supporting me and our entire Idaho congressional delegation in fighting against this wholesale assault on our self determination.” His comments drew sustained applause.

“I will not allow Idaho to become the nation’s dumping ground for its elemental mercury,”—funny how these no brainers come around in an election year. And yet he’s done nothing about the north Nevada gold mine or the cement factory just across the border in Oregon which continues to be the second biggest point source in the nation and blowing our way.

That’s not to mention the fact that fossil fuels are a major source of heavy metals. And his party does little to transition away from our dependence on them jeopardizing our future and our national security.

And what’s with that ridiculous comparison. Its just false. Idaho stands to be one of the biggest winners on health care reform. http://healthaffairs.org/blog/2010/01/07/health-care-reform-state-winners-and-losers/
