Eye On Boise

Long night of ballot-counting ahead…

Problems in Kootenai County - the state's third-most-populous county - could delay election results tonight. In the primary election in May, Kootenai County had virtually no results until after midnight. This time, the county's chief deputy clerk, Pat Raffee, sent out a news release in advance.“For the last two elections we have had difficulty uploading results to the County’s website,” Raffee said. “In the past, we have attempted to upload results as many as seven times per election. Our software vendor has advised elections staff to upload less frequently, in larger batches of precincts, for smoother result uploads.”

What that means: Kootenai County plans to release its absentee and early voting results around 9:30 p.m. local time - which is 10:30 p.m. down in Boise. Then, it won't have any more results until its second upload at 11 p.m. local time, which should include 20 of the county's 70 precincts. At 12:30 local time, it'll have another batch, bringing it up to about 50 of the 70 precincts; then nothing more 'til final results somewhere around 2 a.m. The only silver lining in this: Kootenai County has seen strong growth in early and absentee voting, which now typically represents more than 20 percent of its votes cast; that makes that first number more meaningful. Election Night Results Posting

Plan & Timeline

Kootenai County’s plan for November 4 election results postings has changed. “For the last two elections we have had difficulty uploading results to the County’s website,” said Chief Deputy Clerk Pat Raffee.  Since May, elections staff has researched methods to prevent a recurrence of this situation.

“In the past, we have attempted to upload results as many as seven times per election,” said Raffee.  “Our software vendor has advised Elections staff to upload less frequently, in larger batches of precincts, for smoother result uploads,” she concluded.

“Our plan is to upload absentee and early voting results first on November 4”, said Raffee, “and that will likely be around 9:30PM.  We anticipate our second upload of results will be posted around 11:00PM; a third upload will be posted around 12:30AM on November 5; and the final unofficial total results will be posted around 2:00AM Wednesday.”

Raffee said the times of expected postings detailed above will appear on the County’s website by the time the polls close on November 4, and it will be amended as needed, so that members of the public seeking election results can plan their time accordingly.
