CenturyLink says it won’t pull plug, school broadband won’t go dark; but it wants to be paid

CenturyLink has issued this statement this morning with regard to the Idaho Education Network, for which it provided the broadband service to Idaho high schools:

“CenturyLink will not shut down the IEN on February 22. Because our primary focus is on the students of Idaho who have become dependent on these services.  We committed to work with the Governor, State leaders and ENA to find a path forward that continues providing this essential service to Idaho students and teachers without interruption, and addresses our need for payment for all services delivered.”

The state stopped paying vendors for the IEN in September because courts have voided the contract, ruling that the state issued it illegally. State law prohibits the state from making payments under an illegal contract; that would be considered a misuse of funds.
