Bill to end daylight saving time-switch in Idaho is dead for this year…

Idaho’s bill to do away with the “fall back” and “spring forward” of daylight saving time is dead; its sponsor, House Majority Leader Mike Moyle, R-Star, says he’ll withdraw the bill and try again next year, after learning that what was proposed in this year’s measure - year-round daylight saving time – is illegal under federal law. Last year, he proposed unsuccessful legislation to put Idaho permanently on standard time. “The intent was, I don’t care which one it is, to get it out there and get a resolution,” Moyle said. “The problem is half want one, half want the other.” You can read my full story here at spokesman.com.

Also today, Idaho Statesman reporter Bill Dentzer reports that the bill would have effectively put southern Idaho on Central time and North Idaho on Mountain time when the rest of the country reverted to standard time in November; if Idaho went with year-round standard time, southern Idaho would match Pacific time during the winter, and North Idaho would be an hour behind that, on Alaska time. His report is online here.
