New foothills fire, growth and ‘extreme behavior’ of Pioneer Fire add to Boise smoke haze

Adding to the smoke haze in Boise, a 30-acre grass fire was reported around 4:40 a.m. in the Boise foothills, off Mountain Cove Road near the Boise Police Department’s gun range. No structures were threatened, and the Boise Fire Department reported that the fire was 100 percent contained by 6 a.m.; its cause is under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Pioneer Fire north of Idaho City had increased fire activity yesterday and “continues to exhibit extreme behavior,” according to the National Interagency Fire Center. As of last night, it was at 38,072 acres and was 28 percent contained; the estimated date for full containment has been pushed back to Sept. 15.
