Tribes’ ‘Return of the Boise Valley People’ set at Quarry View Park

Descendants of the Native American people who originally inhabited the Boise Valley will return for the sixth annual “Return of the Boise Valley People” event tomorrow through Sunday at Quarry View Park in Boise, with the public invited Friday, starting at 10:30 a.m., to learn about the tribes’ culture, with informational booths and cultural demonstrations throughout the day.

The Idaho National Guard, which helps coordinate the event, will dedicate an aircraft at Gowen Field in honor of Idaho tribes as part of the event.

Descendants of the original Boise Valley people are from the Shoshone-Bannock Tribes in Fort Hall, Idaho; Shoshone-Paiute Tribes, Owyhee, Nev.; Burns Paiute Tribe, Burns, Ore.; Fort McDermitt Paiute-Shoshone, McDermitt, Nev.; and Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Warm Springs, Ore. The tribes will gather to share stories and remember their ancestors, who were forcibly removed by soldiers from the Boise Valley in the late 1800s when silver and gold were discovered.

Quarry View Park, the site of Castle Rock, is a spiritual gathering place for tribal people; it is located at 2150 Old Penitentiary Road. The tribes hope eventually to build a monument and cultural center in Boise to share their history.
