Four Supreme Court candidates to debate this week

Here’s a link to our Sunday story about the four-way race for the Idaho Supreme Court, which notes that the top race on the Idaho ballot on May 17 isn’t in either the Republican or Democratic primary – it’s the nonpartisan race for an open seat on the state’s highest court, a rare contested race that’s drawn four candidates. Everyone who votes in the primary election, regardless of party, can vote in the Supreme Court race.

If none of the four candidates gets a majority in May, the two with the most votes will go to a runoff in the November general election. I have full profiles of all four candidates online here.

Also, there are two chances this week for people to hear the candidates: The City Club of Boise will hold a luncheon candidate forum with all four on Wednesday at the Grove Hotel; there’s more info here. And on Friday, the four candidates will square off in the “Idaho Debates” on Idaho Public Television, in an hour-long debate that will be broadcast live statewide, starting at 8 p.m. The Idaho Debates are co-sponsored by the Idaho Press Club and the League of Women Voters of Idaho; there’s more info here. This is the only debate in the series this spring, but there will be more in the fall before the general election.
