Tamarack acquired by its homeowners association, tax auction of chairlifts, lodge averted

Tamarack Resort at Donnelly has been acquired by its homeowners association, who announced today that they will operate the ski and summer resort after they “successfully acquired substantially all of the assets.” That included paying off back taxes to avoid the auction of chairlifts, a zipline course and the mid-mountain lodge by Valley County.

“Today marks the start of a new chapter for Tamarack where homeowners have secured the future ownership and operations of the resort,” Tamarack said in a news release today. “It is a powerful statement of support and ensures the long-term future of this incredible destination for guests, employees and homeowners as well as the wider community in Valley County and the state of Idaho.”

The ski area at Tamarack is on state endowment land leased from the state of Idaho.

When Tamarack opened in 2004 overlooking Lake Cascade, it was touted as a rare new U.S. destination ski and summer resort. But bankruptcies, repossession of a chairlift, buildings left unfinished and the absconding of its former chief investor followed. Homeowners who had invested in slopeside homes, a key part of how the resort was financed, were left to pick up the pieces

Now, the new operator of the resort will be the Tamarack Municipal Association. It will operate skiing, food and beverage, lodging and summer operations “with no interruption of services to resort guests.”

The resort plans to begin making snow in November and announced a projected opening date for skiing of Dec. 9.
