Labrador named chair of House immigration subcommittee

Idaho 1st District GOP Rep. Raul Labrador has been named chairman of the House Immigration and Border Security Subcommittee, a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee, Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., announced today. Labrador replaces Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., who will shift to chair the subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigations, as that panel’s chair, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., takes over the chairmanship of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Labrador pledged to “continue to fight to modernize the broken immigration system,” saying, “This is an issue that is very close to my heart and that I’ve worked on for a long time. As chairman, I will prioritize legislation that enforces our laws, secures our borders, and modernizes our immigration system for the twenty-first century.”

Labrador, an immigration attorney and fourth-term congressman, has introduced two immigration-related bills this year, both with Goodlatte: HR 2431, the Davis-Oliver Act, an immigration enforcement crackdown bill; and HR 2826, the Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act, which limits refugee resettlement, cutting it by more than half and giving states and localities veto power over any refugee resettlement within their borders.

Goodlatte said in a statement that he’s “pleased to announce the addition of Rep. Labrador to our leadership team for the House Judiciary Committee,” saying, “As a former immigration lawyer, Rep. Labrador’s expertise will prove invaluable as the new Chairman of the Immigration Subcommittee.”
