"during his tenure as campaign manager, through traditional investments which are government-backed CDs, he had brought in over $300,000 in interest payments. "
Candidates for U.S. office typically spend 90% of their time trolling for contributions and endorsements (which are about PAC contributions, as well). Bad enough that most of this money is spent on broadcast media -- usually negative campaign messages. Now to learn that contributions are treated as an investment fund...election reform is overdue!

Reality and perception are two different things. Although you are probably correct, the perception, put out by many legislators, is that they are superior to public schools.

Luna claims that underfunding of Idaho schools has a single cause: large families. This laughably simpleminded and simplistic statement comes just one a sentence or two after his claim that identifying causes is a complicated matter, and it is flatly contradicted in the paragraph that follows.
This is the same buffoon who couldn't tell you how many of the employees he supervises had left the state, but he could say with certainty that they were leaving because Suzie Creamcheese, teacher, was following Big Daddy Bread-Earner as he left the state to go where the jobs are. You have a very bad habit of making a claim without even a shred of supporting evidence, as if simply saying something is enough to make it true. That's hardly a persuasive way to advance an argument. How about you start by PROVING that it is a myth that many charter schools are able to avoid taking on special-needs students and low-income students, instead of just expecting us to believe it simply because you said it?

That is a different school. The one that I mentioned was sued because they showed that they didn't need the funding to have high scores and that put the burr under the saddle of the Chicago schools. They did not receive any additional funding.

Not sure what your point at me was, as I am saying that it is the non-learner that is the problem as in: "students who wanted to learn were separated from those who were just there because the truant officer said they had to be in school, and the teachers who wanted to teach were put in charge of the classes who wanted to learn.
That is my point about Charter and Private schools becoming popular. Those parents and there kids are getting away from the willful failure. Take the willful failure out of the public schools, and I believe that most Public schools would compete with any Charter or Private school.

You conveniently left out the fact in your Chicago example that for a 5 year period the school in question was given essentially a blank check. They spent it, outcomes improved, now at the end of the funding period the school is letting teachers, resource officers etc. go due to the funding cuts to back to original levels. Any guess as to what the best future outcomes will be?

May 21 at 4:46 p.m.
Thank you all for your thoughts. In Chicago inner schools with poor funding, no support from home and crowded classes, students who wanted to learn were separated from those who were just there because the truant officer said they had to be in school, and the teachers who wanted to teach were put in charge of the classes who wanted to learn. The standardized test scores matched those from the well funded white schools in Chicago. That is fact. To prevent that from happening again, the Chicago School District and the ACLU sued the school that showed money didn't make for smarter, better students. After that all the kids were equally dumb, ignorant and unlearned.

There is a cost --books cost the same no matter which state. Technology and online resources are no cheaper here (and might even be more given out cost of broadband). Salaries of staff is the largest cost, and when there is a more attractive package in Wyoming, Oregon or Washington, people move.
It is hard to get above average results with bottom of the barrel funding.
PalouseDave on Idaho ed spending still at the bottom
May 21 at 10:35 a.m.
Dollars per student is a poor method of ranking the quality of education. Many private and home schools produce higher quality students than Idaho public schools using only a fraction of the national average over $10,000 per student. It is not because of smaller class size or staying at home it is because the money used is carefully and thoughtfully spent on education rather than being spent on frivolous things that look good but don't contribute to education.
Perhaps we should look at how many National Merit scholars are produced each year rather than the amount of money per student that is wasted by bureaucratic school boards throughout our state.

If they were there because they were going to save the state money, they wouldn't have had to give Butch Otter all those campaign contributions.
CCA has overbilled for tens of millions of dollars around the nation. In conjunction with their major competitor, GEO Group, they overbilled the state of Florida and the state of New Mexico for a combined $30 million or so. They had a cozy enough relationship where they got away with it completely in New Mexico and only reimbursed the state of Florida for about $5 million.
Charging for "ghost employees" is larceny, purely and simply. Figuring at a very low rate of $20 an hour including benefits and profits, 5,000 hours means they overbilled Idaho for over $100,000. I'm guessing that if a proper audit was done, it would be many times that.

Keep a big border between your home and the forest, clear out low lying brush and protect yourself. Taxpayers shouldn't be paying the bill for people who live in rural areas, flood plains and other places where Mother Nature will always win.
