Ketchum, Hailey voters approve local-option tax to boost commercial airline service

Voters in Ketchum and Hailey have approved a local-option tax on lodging and rental cars to subsidize commercial airline service, with the projected $2 million a year proceeds to help entice airlines to serve the Wood River Valley, either through subsidies or advertising support. The Idaho Mountain Express reports that turnout was heavy, with mayor and council races also being decided; voters in both Ketchum and Hailey backed the air service tax measure by close to a 2-1 margin. It needed 60 percent to pass; it got 66 percent in Hailey and 64 percent in Ketchum. Boise State Public Radio has more here.

Hailey’s hope: Awaiting Bowe Bergdahl’s return…

The yellow ribbons, some tattered, some faded, can be seen long before state Highway 75 spills into Hailey, Idaho — home to America's only prisoner of war in its conflict with Afghanistan, writes AP reporter John Miller. They hang from roadside utility poles and in front of homes near the one where Bowe Bergdahl grew up. They adorn virtually every tree and light post on Main Street, where signs in shop windows issue pleas to “Bring Bowe Home.”

The ribbons may be the most visible sign that the people of Hailey haven't forgotten the Army sergeant who, four years ago June 30, disappeared from his base in southeastern Afghanistan and was taken captive by the Taliban. But there are other reminders, too: The Norway maple trees— one for each year Bergdahl has been held — planted in the local park. Even Bergdahl's father, once the town's clean-shaven UPS deliveryman, has grown a long beard, a personal monument to his son's plight, not likely to be shorn until he is freed. Bruce Willis puts Idaho home on market for $15 million

Here's a news item from the Associated Press: HAILEY, Idaho (AP) — “Die Hard” movie star Bruce Willis is asking $15 million for his Idaho home complete with a guesthouse, gym and pool with water slides. The Idaho Mountain Express (http://bit.ly/upNUKX ) reports Willis' property in Hailey's Flying Heart subdivision is up for sale because he hasn't been able to spend much time in the area. This is just part of Willis' plans to pare his ties to the region. He's also trying to unload The Mint bar and nightclub on Hailey's Main Street after dropping the price to $4.5 million, from $6 million when it went on the market last year. Willis and former wife, Demi Moore, became part of the celebrity scene in the Sun Valley area during the 1990s. Willis still owns a ski area, Soldier Mountain, west of Hailey.
