Down To Earth

Tuesday Video - what lurks beneath the surface

"There is nothing natural about what we dove in today." Ap Photographer Rich Matthews on diving in the Gulf. Dropping beneath the surface the only thing I see is oil. To the left, right, up and down -- it sits on top of the water in giant pools, and hangs suspended fifteen feet beneath the surface in softball sized blobs. There is nothing alive under the slick, although I see a dead jellyfish and handful of small bait fish.

And how about this for a quote from ecologist Nicole Heller on the Climate Central blog, "I guess we will just have to wait and see and learn as we go, which isn’t very satisfying considering that oil continues to spill into the ocean.  Silly me, I thought we were supposed to understand the environmental risks, and how to conduct cleanup efforts, before we gave permits for oil drilling."
