Spokane Riverkeeper and Sustainable September

The fun continues this month with more awesome events for Sustainable September. This Thursday evening, you'll have the opportunity to learn more about the Spokane Riverkeeper program and check out the Sustainable September Stormwater/ Non-point Management Speaker Series conceived by Stan Miller.

From the Center For Justice: The Spokane Riverkeeper program will present background information about the program and the work being done to protect and sustain the health of the Spokane River this Thursday as part of a month-long speaker series for Sustainable September Spokane.

Sustainable September is a month-long series of events that raises awareness about sustainability efforts in the Inland Northwest and beyond, and that brings people together who work in different arenas or on different parts of the sustainable movement.  This Thursday, the Spokane Riverkeeper Bart Mihailovich, program director and attorney Rick Eichstaedt, and Mike Chappell, the director of Gonzaga’s environmental law clinic will present as part of a month-long speaker series focusing on the Spokane River, work being done to protect and sustain the health of it, and threats against it.

Join us this Thursday evening, September 16th, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Community Building Lobby at 35 West Main Avenue in downtown Spokane.  Our presenation will feature a short video about the national Waterkeeper Alliance, background information on the Spokane Riverkeeper program, legal aspects of stormwater control and other Clean Water Act issues, and current work being done by the Spokane Riverkeeper.  There will be time afterwards to ask questions and create a conversation around these issues.

The Sustainable September Stormwater / Non-point Management Speaker Series was conceived by Stan Miller, retired Director of the Spokane County Water Resources Program and Senior Scientist and Principal: Inland Northwest Water Resources consulting.  Previous speakers this month included Stan himself and Kat Hall, The Lands Council's Spokane River toxics specialist.  The series continues next week with Len Zickler, Liscensed Landscape Architect & Planner who will present on Thursday, September 23 about Low Impact Design (LID) 101: "The basic elements of LID and how they reduce runoff and contaminant loading using site design rather than plumbing.”  It concludes on September 30th with Marcia Davis, PE, Senior Engineer with the City of Spokane Engineering Services.  Marcia will talk about Capital Programs and the City of Spokane’s Stormwater Urban Runoff Greenway Experiment (SURGE) program. She will given an overview of the Lincoln Street and Broadway Avenue projects and how this type of design factors into the City’s Stormwater / CSO control programs.

Again, please join us this Thursday evening for an engaging discussion and informal presentation about the Spokane Riverkeeper program and work being doing to clean up and sustain the health of our city's great resource.

“The Spokane River is one of our city’s most beautiful, important features. Join local experts in stormwater issues from the non-profit, engineering, and legal realms to learn more about Spokane’s unique storm water and non-point source issues and the solutions being implemented.”  Stan Miller
