Spokane Riverkeeper on Clean Fertilizers, Healthier Lakes and Rivers bill: “Yes, it really is this simple.”

New message from our esteemed Riverkeeper, Bart Mihailovich, on the action in Olympia:

Yes, it really is this simple.

Great news! Last week the Washington State House of Representatives passed the Clean Fertilizers, Healthier Lakes and Rivers bill, HB 1489, by a vote of 58-39. Now, we need your help to make sure it passes the Senate as well.

Tell your State Senator to support HB 1489, a commonsense and cost effective approach to making sure that our lakes and rivers are clean.

In Washington, we know that a strong economy and a clean environment go hand in hand.  That’s why the Environmental Priorities Coalition, Scott’s Miracle-Gro, Fred Meyer, Washington Retail Association, Avista Corp., Inland Paper Company, dozens of local governments across the state and the Washington State House of Representatives all support managing the sale of phosphorus in lawn fertilizers.

Yes, it really is this simple.  A recent Seattle Times editorial sums it up well, “Protecting Washington water quality is not in conflict with healthy green lawns.  Legislation that would limit use of fertilizers containing phosphorus is a manageable step for the state.”

When phosphorus in fertilizer washes off of our lawns into lakes, rivers, and Puget Sound, it causes pollution that costs taxpayers and businesses millions of dollars to clean up.  Excess phosphorus in our waterways causes rapid growth of weeds and smelly algae blooms that can harm fish, wildlife and public health.

You don’t need phosphorous in your fertilizer to have a green lawn; there are better, cheaper alternatives that give all of us the freedom to have a beautiful yard and clean rivers.  Scott’s Miracle-Gro, the world’s largest marketer of consumer products for lawn and garden care (and a supporter of this legislation), will be phosphorus free in all of their lawn maintenance fertilizer products by 2012.

But in a tough legislative session, even a commonsense solution needs your help getting over the finish line.  Email your State Senator to support HB 1489, a commonsense and cost effective approach to making sure that our lakes and rivers are clean.
