A new Spokesman-Review blog

Welcome to a new blog we are launching today.

For starters, I will be blogging about the Sochi Winter Olympics, which I will be attending as a mentor/editor with 24 journalism students and three faculty members from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. However, after I return from about eight days in Russia, I will begin blogging regularly about a variety of topics of interest to our readers.

The students will be writing about the athletes, fans, culture and perhaps controversy. The students are not eligible for official media credentials, so they will not attempt to report the latest results from the daily competition.

While I will be sharing observations and stories on the newspaper's blog, I am not going in my capacity of editor of S-R. I will be using vacation time for the trip and the newspaper is not paying any of my expenses.

The Indiana group is trying to fly out a day early because a severe storm is now predicted for Wednesday. I will fly on Wednesday, meeting the students and the profs in Amsterdam. We fly from Amsterdam to Moscow, where we stay overnight before catching a plane the next morning to Sochi.

I visited Moscow before the fall of communism, so I am eager to see what's changed. I intend to blog each day and I hope the armchair travelers among you will join me. You can also follow me on Twitter @glgraham, assuming I can arrange for an international data plan that won't bankrupt me or my grandchildren.
