Retired EWU president Rodolfo Arevalo receives emeritus status

Former Eastern Washington University President Rodolfo Arevalo, who retired in July, will keep his title.

The EWU Board of Trustees last week approved the ceremonial designation of "president emeritus" for Arevalo, who led the university for eight years and spent 42 years in higher education overall.

Trustee James Murphy, a retired Spokane County Superior Court judge, told the board that the designation carries no financial obligation for the university and is simply a way of reflecting a distinguished career.

Arevalo becomes the second EWU president to carry the president emeritus title, though a third was allowed to keep the ceremonial title of "professor emeritus."

Former EWU President H. George Frederickson, who served from 1977 to 1987, was given president emeritus status, according to the university, while former President Alexander Schilt (1987-89) was given the title of "professor emeritus" in applied psychology.
