Former surgeon general will keynote WSU Pharmacy College commencement

Former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona will serve as keynote speaker for WSU's College of Pharmacy commencement May 7 at the Fox Theater.

Carmona, who served four years as the nation's top medical officer during the George W. Bush administration, is a nationally recognized advocate for encouraging healthier lifestyles. As surgeon general, he issued the landmark report warning about dangers of second-hand smoke and was among the first to sound the alarm over increasing rates of obesity in America.

The commencement ceremony is set for 2 p.m.

The College of Pharmacy, which just earned renewal of its national accreditation through 2023, is based in Spokane and has about 450 students enrolled in doctorate programs. Most are studying to become doctors of pharmacy but WSU also offers a Ph.D. program in pharmaceutical science.
