Gonzaga will again offer free beginning Chinese programs this summer

Gonzaga University will again offer free Chinese language courses this summer for elementary, middle and high school students.

Up to 60 students will be accepted into the program, which the university provides through an $89,380 grant from Startalk, a federally sponsored program intended to foster interest in less commonly taught languages. It’s the seventh year Gonzaga has offered the program.

Participants will receive beginning Chinese language instruction as well as exposure to cultural activities such as Tai Chi, calligraphy, dance and watercolor painting.

Application materials are available on the university's website.

Startalk is part of the National Strategic Language Initiative, a collaboration of the U.S. departments of State, Education, and Defense, and the director of National Intelligence. It’s designed to increase the number of Americans learning “critical-need languages” considered vital to ensuring U.S. security, maintaining economic competitiveness, and fostering intercultural understanding.
