Huckleberries Online

Q & A

Question: There is an article in the CDA Press today (6/10/05) re: McEuen Field. It states that the city of CDA "... made its first purchase toward acquiring Tubbs Hill, and this future park site was included in that purchase." Future park site meaning McEuen Field. I have lived in CDA all of my life and I was always told that Mae McEuen owned the property and gifted it to Coeur d'Alene with the stipulation that it had to remain public property with baseball fields because she was a strong supporter of the sport. Does anyone on your staff have any knowledge of the history of McEuen Field?

Karen Gravelle

DFO: McEuen Field was named in honor of Mae McEuen, a local grocer and community booster who was known for supporting children's recreation and often provided treats after games. However, she never owned any part of the park, which at one time was covered with small homes that housed mill workers for the old Rutledge mill (site of the current Coeur d'Alene Resort golf course).
