The Loyal Opposition

Today, Jerry Brady announced his candidacy to become the Democratic nominee for Governor of Idaho, joining Butch Otter on the GOP side. Brady, the 2002 Democratic nominee, is making his second run. Jerry is the owner and president of the Idaho Falls Post Company, which publishes the Post-Register newspaper and owns a television station in SE Idaho.

The other most likely candidate on the Democratic side is State Senator and Senate Minority Leader Clint Stennett of Ketchum. Clint has been in the legislature for about 14 years, first in the House and then the Senate. He's also a native Idahoan, as is Brady, and Clint has a great story to tell about overcoming the odds and entrepreneurial success in Idaho.

It looks like this will be the first time in 12 years that there will be a seriously competitive Democratic primary for Governor with two well-known and qualified candidates. Brady probably has an early advantage from a name ID perspective having run last time, but Stennett knows his way around the statehouse, knows state issues as well or better than anyone, and should be a formidable campaigner.

There's life in that Idaho Democratic party yet...(for the local party, click here.
