But A Spark

We hiked to the windy ridge
wishing for flames of sage to mark
our way, to trail our footsteps as if
to say
in all the dry failings of man, in all
the regret mounded into pyres,
we are but a spark from redemption.

The north wind was cold and blew
dust into our eyes.
