Impressions From City Elections Interviews

In order of interview today:

Sandi Bloem: Class act. Impeccably dressed in pinks and grays, with monster gold rings on each hand. (Hey, she's a jeweler, whaddaya expect?) She still has a little of that former-teacher thing going. But she has some monster accomplishments this time around that she didn't have four years ago -- Sanders Beach, partnership developments all along the waterfront that will benefit the community, downtown redevelopment. And, after she stood her ground against Duane Hagadone re: the downtown memorial garden, no one can claim she's his puppet this time around.

Woody McEvers: Still a surfer dude, with that blond, shoulder-length hair. Woody was dressed out relaxed, blue jeans, sneakers and two layers of shirts, topped off with a wind breaker. Extremely frank. Told me that he's no longer associated with Hagadone in anyway since someone else bought the Hayden property where his Rustlers Roost biz sits. Also, he could see no reason of closing any part of Sherman Avenue for private use. However, he wouldn't commit to a position on a downtown botanical garden, stating that he would be willing to vote on the issue if it came up again rather than sending it to a public vote.

Mike Kennedy (relaxed look, long-sleeve, light-blue shirt, open at the collar, with dress pants): Superb candidate for open seat who brings a strong background in communications and ties to Boise (which can be important for CDA in getting things done). Knows the issues. Didn't shrink from any question. Dunno if opponents will make an issue of Demo ties. Or the fact that he's waiting for his house to be built in CDA Place while renting a room from a friend so he can qualify to run in election. Greatest strength: Brilliant tactician who was instrumental in library and public safety bond passages. As father of 5 little kids, he'd bring a different perspective on a council dominated by middle-aged members.

Mary Souza (well-coiffed, tan jacket and pants, setting off white turtle-neck): Never met her before. Very favorably impressed. Passionate and animated. She's a community activist who's cut her teeth with school involvement and on the planning and zoning committee while running a successful north town business. Knows planning and growth issues backward and forward. Hesitated only when I tried to pin her down on a downtown memorial garden (which Hagadone sez isn't going to happen) and McEuen Field. That could come from her background as a planner trying not to show her hand until all the details were in front of her. She and Mike are well-qualified for this spot.

Tomorrow: 10:30 -- Dan Yake, 11:30 -- Joe Kunka, and 1:30 -- Suzie Snedaker.
