Question: How Can We Save Other Kyllas?

Sgt. Christie Wood, left, of the Coeur d’Alene Police and Glenn Lauper of the Coeur d’Alene Fire Department at scene of C Street fire. (Jesse Tinsley, Spokesman-Review)

Issue: Girl dies from burns in CdA house fire: 13-month-old was alone when blaze started/Taryn Brodwater, Spokesman-Review; and: Baby girl dies in fire: Mother sat outside unknowingly as flames engulfed 13-month-old Kaylla/Marc Stewart and Dave Turner, Coeur d’Alene Press

Rescuer Stacey Alexander (from CDA Press): “I’ll never get that out of my mind. I wish I could. I can still taste the smoke on her lips.”

Teresa Alexander (from Spokesman-Review): “She was adorable. She had fair skin, big brown eyes. She loved SpongeBob.”

Question: How can we, as a community, prevent this happening to another child? Or is this just the way it is and we’re helpless to act?
