CDA Press: Pay More for Certain County Positions
We commend Kootenai County for exercising fiscal restraint and adopting a 2006-2007 budget that is not just leaner than the law allowed, but leaner than some taxpayers had even hoped for. Having said that, here's a suggestion: When it comes to hiring people for the very most important jobs, don't be afraid to spend. The county is struggling to find top-flight prospects for its vacancies. Nowhere is this more apparent than the county planning director's position, formerly held by Rand Wichman. When he resigned this summer, Wichman was earning $66,300 a year. The county is advertising the position at $55,000 to $65,000 -- great pay for many of us, but probably not enough to attract someone with the vision and experience this job requires. Question: Should Kootenai County pay more for select high-profile positions, like the planning director? Or should it hold the line and find someone qualified for less money?
