The VA hospital has noticed a high rate of back injuries, most likely due to the weight of equipment they carry while fighting. 1. A Spokane man watched in desperation as his dying friend struggled for breath, but he couldn't get immediate assistance from professionals just inside Spokane's Veterans Affairs Medical Center. 2. A Republican state lawmaker is criticizing Gov. Brian Schweitzer for comments he made to a newspaper here about the lawmaker's belief that the planet is not millions of years old here.

3. It's been 47 years since the state set jury duty pay at $10 a day. Next month, jurors in two Washington counties and one municipal court system will begin making $61.04 a day -- the equivalent of eight hours at the state's minimum wage -- as part of a state-funded pilot project to see if boosting jury duty pay will get a greater number and more diverse pool of people to serve here.

4. 'Tis hard to believe that anyone would glory in someone else's tragedy. But the commenters who haunt the Democratic Underground Web site were rejoicing at the news of former Congressman Helen Chenoweth-Hage's death in a vehicle accident last week, according to D.F.
