Sayler: A Non-Event Becomes Front-Page News

re: GOP bellyaching that Coeur d'Alene High students seeking extra credit were only told they could help Demo George Sayler's political campaign.

It seems one parent heard that teachers at CHS were promoting my campaign by offering extra credit to volunteer for me, but did not mention others. Twenty-one students showed up to help do a literature drop, all were asked if they were aware they could volunteer for other candidates or parties, and all said yes! ... Teachers have been providing those opportunities to students for well over 20 years. For someone to now suggest that it is being done to support a particular candidate is a reflection of a lack of knowledge on their part, or deliberate misrepresentation. Mr. Rasmussen, as head of the Pachyderm Club and Vice-Chair of the Kootenai County Republican Party, should know that members of his own party, including Representative Chadderdon and Senator Jorgenson, have benefitted from student help in years past.
