Huckleberries Online

Inside Huckleberries — 10/10/06

*Among those called for jury duty for the Joseph Edward Duncan III murder trial? Lansing Haynes, the new district court judge and former Kootenai County chief deputy prosecutor.

*Family Phil's a proud Stay-at-Home poppa today, e-mailing HBO an article about Dad Blogs.com in the Charlotte Observer to which he contributes here.

*I had an e-mail chat with Lewiston Trib opiner Jim Fisher this afternoon and figured out a way around the Trib firewall to begin running the Trib's superb opinion pieces in Best of the INorthwest and elsewhere on Huckleberries Online.

*Note -- from OrangeTV: "I want to thank you so much for the hook-up the other day - My first restaurant review should be published in the St. Maries Gazette in 2-3 weeks! I will keep you updated." (I passed along OrangeTV's name when St. Maries Gazette publisher Dan Hammes e-mailed to ask if I knew of anyone who does restaurant reviews. O-TV's got a gift for review, and I'm sure he's going to make us HBOers proud.)

*Capt. Ben Wolfinger responds to "Inside Huckleberries" post about Duncan media situation: "The Sheriff and the courts both tried to establish a media center across the street from the courtroom, but the BOCC decided not to sign the contract and/or pay for the space."

*Today is the month-before deadline for campaign financial disclosure statements. The biggest surprise so far is that House District 5 Demo wannabe Chuck Thomas (v. Repub Jim Hammond) has raised almost $20,000 (most of it his).

*Dunno who to credit with the brain cramp for the lack of media facilities for the mega-trial of Joseph Edward Duncan III: Sheriff Rocky Watson, the courts, or the commissioners office. Ah, boys and girls, has anyone mentioned that this is the biggest trial in Kootenai County of the century, possibly forever? And you haven't provided squat for the nation's media to cover it? Not a room. Not a trailer. Nothing. Zip. Nada. You're going to squander all the points you earned with your swell initial handling of this case. You're being Bush League now.

*Do you recall the Sunday edit by the CDA Press arguing for better pay for key Kootenai County staff? Well, a Berry Picker called a few minutes ago to say that Brand X should practice what it preaches. Seems six newspaper types are on welfare because they don't earn enough money. Some work two jobs to make ends meet. The source also noted that The Duane doesn't pay vision or dental insurance and that Hagadone employees of all stripes (including the resort) are responsible for the hospital's most indigency billings to the county. But that is a swell mansion in Palm Desert.
