Huckleberries Online

Inside Huckleberries — 10/11/06

*Holly Bowen (from the NIC Sentinel) reports: "Less than an hour ago I received word that possibly up to five NIC math instructors are quitting. Apparently one instructor went overseas, and another subbed for her. The college reportedly refuses to pay neither."

*KVNI's Dick Haugen has extended his biennial invitation to get together to discuss the SR endorsements on the day before the election. Our discussion will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 6. Mark your calendars.

*I'm done with the day's political interviewing. Steve Elgar, Chuck Thomas, Tom Malzahn and Jim Hammond today. Bob Wynhausen, Marge Chadderdon, Ray Writz (Constitutional candidate against John Goedde) and Sharon Culbreth tomorrow.

*I made a front-page story in the North Idaho Sentinel yesterday re: the flap about the two Student Senate candidates who posed nearly nekkid for flyers. Which prompted a higher-up to claim sexual harassment because the flyers made their way into the women's restroom. Seems the Nearly Nekkid candidates were ticked at me for calling them wanna-bes in print Huckleberries. They felt that I wasn't taking their candidacies seriously. Seems they didn't realized that I call most candidates wannabes. And it's hard to take a candidacy seriously when wannabe poses in the altogether to attract attention.

*Andy Hedden-Nicely, United candidate for Congress, via e-mail: "I'm just curious about your endorsement of Larry Grant since you didn't bother to talk with me. Are you sure you made the right choice? How would you know? Since I was purposely excluded from the North Idaho Press Club debate that you cite as your justification in endorsing Grant I have serious concerns about fairness and openness in North Idaho. I can only hope that others in the media are as bothered about this situation as I am." (I responded to Hedden-Nicely that I listened to him and other congressional candidates for 90 minutes during the spring debate in Post Falls. And that the SR was very comfortable with its endorsement of Demo Larry Grant.)

*I just about spit out my coffee when I opened my e-mail just now and saw that press release from Dan Whiting of U.S. Sen. Larry Craig's office: "Craig accepting page applications." 'Twould be better to hold off on that one until after the November elections.

*Busy morning today: I interviewed House District 1 wannabe Steve Elgar by phone. I have interviews with Senate District 5 wannabe Chuck Thomas and county Treasurer Tom Malzahn pending and another one with Senate District 5 wannabe Jim Hammond this afternoon. The election season is upon us.
