Huckleberries Online

Inside Huckleberries — 4/18/07

*A little nugget spotted by Barb Scaroni in St. Maries Gazette-Record re: Coeur d'Alene Indian Tribe: "In this case, a wealthy tribe seeks to avoid paying property taxes to a county suffering with significant growth issues, unfounded mandates and a 3 percent cap on taxes each year," Thought you'd enjoy it, too.

*As I mentioned last night, Major John Chamness corrected the figure he'd given me for dirt moval for the Kroc Center project. The original figure was $2.38 per cubic yard, which Spencer, of course, questioned. That's the original figure. The new figure is lower, $2.05 per cubic yard. That's the total for every yard of dirt handled, coming and going from the center, and moved around the center -- 1,456,873 cubic yards divided by the contract amount of $2,985,000 should come out to $2.05 per cubic yard. Dirt cheap. And certainly much cheaper than the airport boulders Spencer was so eager to foist on the center at $4 per cubic yard (just to crush).

*Mari/Dogwalk Musings asked this question the other day: "In this morning's Coeur d'Alene Press it was announced that a group of civic minded developers have donated $300,000 bringing the total of the $6 million needed before June 1 to $5.4 million. Front page news. Now, the Spokesman Review reports the same donation, in a squib on the first page of Section B, but says the total is $4.4 million. A million dollar difference this close to ground breaking is huge. Which paper has it correct?" Megan Beck, who's handling fund-raising/PR for the Kroc Center project answers in an e-mail: "Our fundraising total is at $4.4 million, the Press misquoted us in the story."
