Sheriff Investigates Fatal Stabbing

A woman fatally stabbed a man who she says raped her early today near Hayden Lake in Kootenai County, a sheriff’s official said. The woman had managed to fight off her attacker, who had stabbed her, and flee in his car before calling deputies, sheriff’s Capt. Ben Wolfinger said in a news release. The man’s body was found on Hayden Creek Road more than a mile north of Hayden Lake road, Wolfinger said. The attack happened in the woods off a road only passable by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, authorities said. It was unclear whether the woman and her attacker knew each other, Wolfinger said. Investigators had not talked to the woman yet, who was being treated at a nearby hospital.
