Managing Editor Gary Graham was named as the new editor of The Spokesman-Review a few minutes ago. He will replace Steve Smith. Who resigned last week after announcing the layoffs of 21 newsroom employees and 4 to 6 managers who have yet to be named. In making the announcement, Publisher Stacey Cowles said he remains committed to the paper's growing online presence and the Voices product. Also, he said, the Idaho office will remain open but the Spokane Valley office might not. In a short statement, Editor Graham said that he viewed his new role as a "job of a lifetime." Graham has worked at three other papers, including one in which he supervised a Pulitzer Prize-winning effort.
