Dotty Cooper watches a desert tortoise that she has named Sadie walk around at Cooper's animal rehabilitation center near Cusick, Wash., Sept. 3. Cooper has custody of the tortoise, which was abandoned, until she can get it a ride south to more desert-like territory and into custody of another animal caregiver. Tortoises that are transported to different regions of the country cannot be returned to the wild because of the possibility of spreading diseases from region to region, said Cooper. Story here.
