Since Spear (shown center w/football coach Robb Akey, left) became the Vandals’ permanent athletic director in 2004, Idaho has hired three football coaches and two men’s basketball coaches. The Vandals are 11-40 in football and 24-95 in men’s basketball in that time. Yet Spear was rewarded with a four-year contract extension last year. It runs through 2012 and guarantees him more than $180,000 per year. “The beauty of the University of Idaho and its passionate alumni base and supporters is they’ve been through some tough times,” he said. “They’re going to be with you through the tough times.” Even the diehards are beginning to get restless at the lack of positive results.
