KMPO: Boxed Wine Helps Enviroment?

So I just got on John (Tesh’s) website and found this interesting factoid, and just in time for your holiday consumption too: “These days a lot of respected wineries are doing away with the glass bottle because manufacturing and shipping them is expensive and wasteful. According to the Wine Group, the largest wine company in the world, using boxes instead of glass bottles is equivalent to taking 25,000 cars off the road every year!” So thank you Mr. Tesh. I can overlook your smarminess for one day to pass that on. Now go out and get yourself some boxed wine (or boxed sparkling cider for you non-drinkers)/Staci Lehman, Kootenai MPO. More here.

Question: How often do you drink boxed wine? If you don’t already drink boxed wine, would you drink it, if you knew that such consumption helped the environment?

Boxed wine has a reputation for being cheap stuff not worthy of a discerning drinker. that is not necessarily true anymore. There are some real good light wines, such as White Grenache, and some roses that are just as good or better than some of the cheaper bottled wines. You still have to be selective of the vintner, however. We have gone from the snob rating from number one, corked wine, number two, screw top and finally number three, boxed wind. In some cases these are progressive steps as packaging innovations occur.

Now this is an interesting question. I don’t often drink boxed wine, not because I’m a wine snob, but because I live in a house of full of teenagers.
My career may make me a tad more skeptical than most moms, but with bottles you can measure the consumption.
    Boxes not so much.

I did start drinking wine a while back and really like Chardonay. Have 1 bottle type that I LOVE, but I started to feel I was spending too much on it - OK I am not a lush and don’t drink constantly, but still….. So I decided to try box - but then I felt strange about it - was I entering into some other place? I mean if you drink box wine, you are one step away from AA right? After conferring with a few friends and my husband I decided to try it. I’m now on my second box and it tastes great, is a good value and in this weather, it sits on a shelf in the garage and stays chilled.

I have to say though that thoughts of helping the environment never crossed my mind….

What was that that jesus said? Something about,” take a little wine for thy stomach’s sake.”
