Not to detract from the tragedy in Lakewood, WA, but let’s not drool all over cops. They serve a purpose, to serve us; yet, they are a cloistered and secretive. Worse, whether anyone admits it or not, they have a code of silence and the record is that not all of them are deserving of anyone’s prayers. Face it, how many times has a cop been let off the hook for a crime they committed, when another person similarly charged receives the full brunt of the law? Just look to Spokane. Just look to how the Kootenai County Jail was a pharmacy for some cops, and amazingly nobody was prosecuted — drugs gone, limited people had access to them, people implicated, and zero charges…ZERO!! Are we going to pray for them too?
Finally, no, not all cops are bad, but many of them are complicit in badness, certainly, even if it is just by honoring their code of silence.
I dunno Papa Bear. Seems a tad disingenuous to point out there are bad cops out there in a thread meant to mourn the murder of four police officers. If four priests were gunned down, would you hasten to point out that some priests are pedophiles? If four teachers were murdered would you be quick to point out the bad apples in the barrel? Teacher’s organizations and the Catholic church are known to clam up and protect their own, too. Just wondering.
Of the three, cops, teachers, or priests, I have to say the worst in terms of sickening manipulation and ultimate harm would be the priests, or any other “representative” of god that abuses people.
Doesn’t excuse the others of course. From a pure civic secular governmental point of view, police misconduct is very grievous. These people are granted life and death powers, and they face life or death situations. We the People are granting them a very powerful check upon our liberty (unrestricted). Accordingly, they should be held to a MUCH higher standard of conduct, all across the board, than the average citizen.
All I know is I wear Seat Belts and try to Stay Out of Trouble. I can’t identify with the ‘cop mentality’, and I tend to shy away from them. At the same time, I sure wouldn’t want to do what Cops do for a living. It’s gotta be a tough job. So they get my (grudging) respect. They’re always on the job, even when they’re punched out. (not the greatest choice of words, eh?) I’ve heard that when cops go out to socialize, they have to go to other towns where no one knows them. Is that true?

You are absolutely correct, Cindy H.
I am sorry to anyone that I offended.
