If you’re like most people, you’d list “O Holy Night” as one of your top three Christmas songs. Or
at least that’s what the pollsters at Zogby International say. (Campaign season is over, and pollsters have to ask about something.) They asked 2,330 adults last month to pick their top three favorite holiday songs from a list of nine tunes, and O-H-N topped the voting, selected by 58 percent. “White Christmas” which might’ve done better in Spokane, given our fondness for things Bing, was second with a mention on 41 percent of those selected, and “The Christmas Song” aka Chestnust Roasting on an Open Fire, was close behind at 38 percent/Jim Camden, Spin Control. Question: Which Christmas song is your favorite?

Jesu Bambino. You don’t hear it much, but it’s a very pretty choir/orchestral carol.
I used to favor O Holy Night until somebody decided that was the national anthem of the Xmas shopping season. Now I feel clobbered over the head to the point where I want to “fall on my knees” and beg them to stop. It’s gone from makes-me-weep beautiful to insidious ear worm.

I’ll be home for Christmas and Little Drummer Boy are my top two

I was listening to a podcast about the origins of Christmas songs (most of the current fav were circa WWII) and their original lyrics that blew my mind. One my favs, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, originally went:
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas, it may be your last,
Next year we may all be living in the past …”
It was made more upbeat over time, such that we now know it has
“Have yourself a merry little Christmas, let your heart be light, Next year all our troubles will be out of sight …”

I’ll admit the barking dog version of “Jingle Bells” cracks me up every time I hear it.

Emannuel.
It has such a haunting melody that captures the longing for peace and salvation.

So good it had to be repeated, eh?
Speaking of ‘not yet traditional’, I’m a fan of Solstice Bells.

The little known Christmas Song by the Dave Matthews Band
Here are the lyrics.
She was his girl; he was her boyfriend
She be his wife; take him as her husband
A surprise on the way, any day, any day
One healthy little giggling dribbling baby boy
The wise men came three made their way
To shower him with love
While he lay in the hay
Shower him with love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
Not very much of his childhood was known
Kept his mother Mary worried
Always out on his own
He met another Mary for a reasonable fee, less than
Reputable as known to be

The Christmas song that always sticks in my brain is “It’s beginning to look alot like Christmas” “Everywhere you go …”. Must be one of my favorites. (Christmas stays, sis, when you get done making everything real PC). I like Christmas.

One of my favorites is “Do You Hear What I Hear”, done by the Harry Simeon Chorale, the same outfit that did the original version of “Little Drummer Boy”.
Least favorite Christmas song: “The 12 Days of…” followed closely by “Rudolph”…
