CindyH:
Here’s a conversation stopper or starter for you. When my 15-year-old son slumped home from school yesterday, I asked him how his day had been. He said, “It sucked. I had to stare at a picture of a penis for like, an hour in health class. That’s just wrong!” I didn’t quite know what to say. However, he brightened up and said, “Tomorrow we’re gonna look at girl parts!” Oh dear.
Question: Were your high school sex ed/health classes educational? (Did you learn anything you didn’t already know?)

Didn’t everyone have a subscription to National Geographic growing up - sheesh.
Bent on December 08 at 10:51 a.m.
I did some studying before I took sex ed, so it was more review and verification for me …
Cindy_H on December 08 at 10:54 a.m.
Here’s the deal. I got totally ripped off. I only got the “You’re a Young Lady Now,” class.
Then we moved and my new district had already done sex ed. Never did get to learn about boy parts.
Now, I have 4 sons.
Oh, the irony.

Well, we never had pictures!!!!

Well the STD slide show was the big deal in our school. Ewwwww.
brentandrews on December 08 at 11:08 a.m.
LOL Bent.
Yeah it was pretty much just “review and comment/and-or crack jokes with your friends” for me, too.
brentandrews on December 08 at 11:10 a.m.
Oh yeah the STD slideshow: that was terrible.
Cindy congratulations on picking the topic elected “most likely to spin out of control” on HBO, heh heh.
Cindy_H on December 08 at 11:13 a.m.
Nah, Brent. In order to spin out of control around here comments need to contain the words: Larry Spencer, Sarah Palin or Mary Souza.
I think we’ll be safe :-)

I remember the human sexuality class in college. After several slides of differing variations of the male genitalia, another non-descript slide was shown. He said, “and this is a uh, just another penis.”
My question for the public schools, how are they gonna make sure the vision impaired students are treated fairly in this topic? Huh?

Your son must be studying the new curriculum developed by Larry Craig at the center for sexual education and human developement based out of Minneapolis International Airport.

We had National Geographic in our house but the real treasure chest was my dad’s stash of “True” magazines in the basement. His medical journals also had some awesome photos from time to time, but mostly it was a gruesome look at all the things that can go wrong with the human body.
By the time I got to high school, all I got for sex ed was a movie on “the monthlies” put out by Kotex. I think this was the earliest-known example of product placement in an educational institution.

Sex Ed just made my curiosity for the opposite sex much greater.
Cindy_H on December 08 at 12:42 p.m.
bpoole: You’re not helping!

I could have used a “Developing Social Skills to Actually Require Sex Ed.” class.
By the way Cindy, I missed your question a couple days ago. The leg is coming along, I have my first physical therapy session today. It was interesting Christmas shopping in the Valley Mall last weekend… in a wheelchair. Talk about handicap awareness.
Cindy_H on December 08 at 2:55 p.m.
Otis, the thought of you out and about in a wheelchair scares me.
Please, no wheelies or spins. I’m assuming they didn’t trust you with an electric model.
Slow and steady, and if a pretty girl offers to push your chair, say yes. Hope you mend quickly!

Sex ed? They have sex ed classes? Dang, I’m old. In the 50’s they pretty much left it up to independent research. Health class seemed to deal with gum disease and hand washing and nutrition.

Here I am, in this bizarre thead, and I have no juicy or racy comment to offer. Except, wasn’t life a lot easier before Sex crept into the picture? I think a lot of people would not totally deny that.
