Column: Music Taste Means A Lot

Listening to music has always been one of my favorite past times. Music is probably what keeps me going in life besides the obvious brain and heart. I’ve always had an interesting relationship with music and sometimes it has even come between a partner and me because we did not see eye to eye on which music was good or bad. Unlike my love for music, I’ve had different relationships in my past — all of which have actually increased my musical tastes as well as confirmed thoughts about others. Fortunately, I’ve always avoided dating someone who enjoys listening to the Insane Clown Posse, but probably only because it would only end up being a deal breaker. Let’s be clear here in saying that just because someone chooses to listen to ICP does not make them a bad person — I am just saying it is not my cup of tea/Anthony Saia, UIdaho Argonaut. More here.

Question: Do you and your significant other share the same taste in music. If not, is it a problem?

My wife was (is) a country music fan. I was a punk rocker raised in the Seatle suburbs during the grunge movement. When we first met, music was not a common bond. It took us a while to find music we could both listen to.

I have much broader tastes in music than she does, but she has expanded her horizons in the past seven years. So it is much easier to find music we both agree on. Now, I can handle country music in the car (as long as I’m not driving) and she will listen to hard rock… as long as the vocalist isn’t screaming.

I have a real problem with those who don’t like The Beatles. Honest. I’ll be the first to admit not everything they did was great, but a lot of it is, although those who don’t like the Beatles won’t share that opinion. But, I suspect those who disagree with me musically won’t be compatible in a lot of other ways as far as I’m concerned. Even if they’re not your favorite group, that’s okay as long as you have room to appreciate at least some of their music. There are the die-hards out there who think The Rolling Stones are best, hands down. I liked the stuff the Stones did in the ‘60’s and the first half of the 70s, for the most part. Since then, they’ve constantly repeated themselves, breaking no new ground. There. I’ve set the fuse. I will now wait for the explosion….
