Sandpoint Mulls Hands-Free Rule

Item: Sandpoint considers hands-free rule: Proposal would ban text messaging altogether while driving/Keith Kinnaird, Bonner County Bee

More Info: “Every time I drive downtown or I’m walking downtown I see people using cell phones who are driving who aren’t paying attention to what they’re doing. Given the renewed safety concerns in our community, it’s time to ban the use of cell phones except for hands-free use in,” said Councilwoman Helen Newton, who is proposing the ordinance.

Question: Would you like to see your North Idaho community adopt a hands-free rule similar to the one that Sandpoint is considering?

I’m sure it will be the norm before too long. Councilwoman Newton has it right.

Its an instant on the spot fine for using a mobile whilst driving here, if one is caught or reported……. and thats even just answering the phone or talking on it, and I have no idea how people can text and drive, the selfishness is beyond me..

It has been proven that hands-free operation of a cell phone while driving is just as hazardous as if you’re holding the phone, checking out your reflection in the phone’s glass window, and singing the Star Spangled Banner backwards to whoever it is that you’re talking to, while you’re steering with your left knee because both hands are holding a newspaper and you’re trying to fill out the crossword puzzle. Well, that may be a slight exaggeration, but you get my point…

No, I would rather they just banned the use of cell phones while driving PERIOD, regardless of whether it’s hands-full or hands-free.

First read on the headline, I thought Sandpoint was going MULLET free.

It’s hard to imagine driving doing anything that might be distractive as it is. I’m with mm.
