After spending $310,000 in private donations to remodel and furnish the governor’s mansion, a five-member panel is now investigating whether to unload the vacant hilltop home. The Governor’s Housing Committee decided late Monday to spend two months gathering information about the advantages of keeping the place — or putting it on the market. There’s little parking, electricity bills are exorbitant and the steep, narrow drive makes access tricky — especially when it snows. And so far, no governor has ever lived there/AP. More here.
Question: Should Idaho sell the governor’s mansion?

Should have never acquired it from Simplot in the first place. It was a King Dirk vanity project from the get-go (not that I wouldn’t prefer to have Dirk on the throne instead of Butchie Tight-Jeans).
So yes, they should sell it. I’d rather they sold the mansion than close the UI research stations in places like Parma and Sandpoint.

Get priorities straight. Unload the Otter first, and then the mansion.

Sell it, AFTER the real estate market comes back, (if ever).

I think this idea would make a lot of cents.

It depends. If we ever elect a Governor who does not live in Boise (it has been known to happen), the alternative would be to provide him with a housing stipend to maintain a second residence in Boise. Would this be cheaper than keeping the Governor’s mansion? Both options should be studied.
