Meet the most non-discriminatory person in North Idaho: Hayden Stern. A first-year general studies student from Santa Cruz, Calif., Stern is the vice president of the Gay Straight Alliance. Stern’s story can be summed up in one sentence - and notice we don’t use a sex-oriented pronoun such as “he” or “she” at request. “It’s actually kinda complicated,” Stern said. Stern is transgender. Stern moved here last December, leaving parents there and a stepsister in Illinois. Not having family here Stern has found support in other ways, including the GSA and religion. Stern was placed in a treatment facility for being bipolar and having an eating disorder/Ann Truesdell, North Idaho College Sentinel. More here.
Question: Do you know any transgender individuals?

I had a colleague at HP who went through a male to female transition, back in the days when this wasn’t a topic that came up in conversation (or anywhere else).
I thought it was an incredibly courageous thing to do, with internal motivation that must have been profound.

I listened last night to a story about a transgender person in a small town in Oregon, Silverton, who gradually let the town know of the transformation. S/he ended up being the mayor. Great story by Radio Lab on a program they label the New Normal? Its the second story on the program and starts around 20:30.
