Raining Chihuahuas & Cats

Dog owners and animal control workers show off Chihuahuas that have deluged the Bay Area’s animal shelters at the Animal Control and Care center in San Francisco earlier today. California has more Chihuahuas than it can handle. It’s gotten so bad in Oakland, they have started shipping them out of state, said Megan Webb, director of Oakland Animal Services. They have sent about 100 to Washington, Oregon and Arizona, she said, “and as soon as they get them, they are ready for new ones.” Chihuahuas make up 30 percent, 40 percent and even more of the dog populations at many California shelters. Question: Have you ever owned a chihuahua? What kind of temperment did it have?

I’ve never owned a Chihuahua, but I did have a toy dog that came from a backyard breeder. I spent thousands of dollars for health care and eventually found out he’d been born with only one kidney.

It’s so sad that with the dwindling classifieds in the S-R, a large percentage of the space is for puppy ads. There must be hundreds of people around here trying to generate “puppy bucks” with backyard breeding operations. They combine every imaginable breed of small dog, call it a “designer” breed and want $700 for a CavalierAffenPooChi.

My husband used to have a chihuahua. It was so delicate it broke it’s leg just walking. Twice. Before we wondered how many thousand dollar vet bills we’d be willing to do over and over again.
Personally, there is no breed of dog that I detest like I detest chihuahuas. This particular one wasn’t quite as rodent like as most of them as it was a long hair, but it was still a chihuahua.
