Richert: Allred Candidacy ‘A Stunner’

Allred may be a relative unknown statewide — especially compared to incumbent Gov. Butch Otter and even GOP primary challengers Rex Rammell and Sharon Ullman, an Ada County commissioner. But he’s well-known around the Statehouse and Idaho public policy circles. His group has analyzed some of the most vexing issues on the legislative agenda — from transportation funding to closed party primaries. The group has also remained assiduously nonpartisan, which makes Allred’s jump into partisan politics a stunner/Kevin Richert, Statesman. More here. And: A Berry Picker sent HBO an e-mail from Allred. And: Allred ready to run for governor/Fort Boise. And: Demos hail Allred candidacy.

Question: Are you more interested in Demo gubernatorial wannabe Keith Allred, after learning a bit about him at Huckleberries Online today?

I’ve never heard of the guy, though it looks like he has a good resume. However, does that translate into votes? He may do a good job of analyzing policy, and may even make some good decisions from an academic perspective, but the “unwashed masses” who vote don’t necessarily care about that - they just want someone to tell them what they want to hear, and give them what they want.

Otter’s a politician, and this Allred guy looks more like an academic. Allred’s “all-California” post-secondary education (Stanford, UCLA) may not exactly resonate with the voters, either (at least it’s not Berkeley). In other words, Otter still has the upper hand.

As an aside, after reading Allred’s letter in the link, does anyone else find it curious that both Democratic gubanatorial candidates who have announced (Allred and Chaney) claim they are really independent, but are running Democrat because they only think they have a chance as a major party candidate? Add to that Walt Minnick, who openly admits he used to be a moderate “Rockefeller” Republican?

    Interesting.

“Otter still has the upper hand. “—LOL, was that ever in doubt? Incumbent Republican. But the party’s fractured and Butch ain’t exactly unifying it. Allred has the education but also established Idaho pedigree. Allred has resolved divisive issues in the legislature and has received accolades from the same Republicans he’s going up against.

Its a late start and he must raise money fast. It will most definitely be an uphill battle. But he appears to be good centrist material to work with. I’ll wait to see what else comes but he’s a problem solver and sure seems like a viable choice at this stage.

Otter may have the upper hand, but he also has a cranial-rectal inversion. that is not good for any incumbant. (example: Bill Sali)

Your second comment raises a very good point Sho Con. Minnick’s gotta be very happy with Allred in the race.
