Trish Gannon:
Perfect opening for something I’ve been wondering about for the last few days. When I meet someone who’s obviously intelligent, I’m not able to predict with any certainty whether they classify themselves as a Republican or a Democrat. But when I meet someone who’s obviously ignorant … 90 percent of the time they identify as a Republican (this observation excludes anyone under the age of 18). Why is that? And I’m actually being serious here, not just a smart aleck like I usually am.
Question: Can you guess a person’s politics upon a first meeting?
poolman on December 11 at 4:41 p.m.
That sounds like a reaction one might have returning home from a Sarah Palin Book signing.
Charles_Dixon on December 11 at 4:50 p.m.
Ah, that classic stereotype. It defines the political landscape more and more every year.
I will say one thing about this topic: Dems certainly do think they’re smarter than Republicans—and everyone else, for that matter.
simpleton on December 11 at 4:54 p.m.
Sorry Charlie, but every Republican I ever met felt he had all the answers, and the Democrats were either wrong or misguided.
A little too ironic that you pan stereotypes, then post one of your own.
Charles_Dixon on December 11 at 4:58 p.m.
I’m sorry. I was merely reflecting on Trish’s own words.
And while any Republican may well tell you they know better than the Dems, Dems as a party have the elitist thing down pat. You can hardly deny it. Barak Obama is the Columbia/Harvard grad who is just smarter than Sarah Palin, who had to go to five different schools to graduate and ultimately got her degree from the pathetic University of Idaho. Obama was a community organizer in Chicago, while Palin was only the governor of a small, stupid western state. The elitism is alive and flourishing on this very blog in the comments.
keithincda on December 11 at 4:59 p.m.
I’ve commented before here about that “elitist” attitude some folks have. Using Trish’s logic and re-thinking folks I interact with, I’d say when I meet some with a condescending (elitist) know it all attitude they end up being Democrats. I mean look on this blog at *** and ******** and ******* and *** and ***, they’re never wrong (and they ALWAYS let us know they aren’t)
keithincda on December 11 at 5:00 p.m.
touche’ Charles…
poolman on December 11 at 5:07 p.m.
Charles - Governor of a state with total population less than the city of Portland Oregon and a state that Mr. Todd would like to see separated from the Union. Hey - I wonder if we could get Canada to trade us British Columbia and Alberta for Alaska and the Palin family.
Charles_Dixon on December 11 at 5:22 p.m.
The population of Alaska was never the main issue with Palin. Dems would think the governor of Rhode Island was fully qualified to be vice president if he were a Democrat who graduated from Yale. After all, he’d be one of them if he was from back east and had the right pedigree.
In reality, the whole Dem hatred of Sarah Palin is inextricably tied to issues of elitism and class. I find it troubling when people I know deride Palin because she graduated from the U of I when those same people claim some sort of superiority over people who graduated from BSU or ISU because they have a degree from … the University of Idaho. People who would never have been accepted at Ivy League schools put down Palin because she is in essence one of them and they can’t stand it. All of the stereotypes that persist about Palin on the left are borne out of elitism and class issues.
Arch_Druid on December 11 at 7:25 p.m.
Sorry, not a graduate of Yale, grew up being educated in the University of Hard Knocks. Sarah Palin is far more elitist by definition than myself.
Now, can we quit turning every mention of Palin into some kind of pity party? With all the books being sold, Ms. Palin is also bound to be very wealthy very shortly.
You might want to think about that for awhile.
Phaedrus on December 11 at 8:03 p.m.

Only if they drool. ;-)
Phaedrus on December 11 at 8:05 p.m.

Wow, keith, just wow! Is that a sense inferiority or just bitterness?
Me on December 11 at 8:10 p.m.
The differences are so apparent here. When I mention the elitism that is the left I’m accused of having a chip on my shoulder and Keith has a sense of inferiority or bitterness.
So do you think when you all call us stupid, uneducated, and inferior to you it doesn’t mean anything to us???
Really Phaed I am asking for truth here - can you just one time not turn it back and look at what you say?
Me on December 11 at 8:11 p.m.
Oh and by the way I do NOT think I am in any way inferior to you, I am not bitter and I don’t have a chip on my shoulder. I am simply responding to what was asked here - and it is my belief that those on the left do think we are inferior and simply need to be shown the light - tell me where I’m wrong?
Me on December 11 at 8:15 p.m.
Oh and Phaed - wow, just wow is mine - just sayin….
:)
Phaedrus on December 11 at 8:15 p.m.
So do you think when you all call us stupid, uneducated, and inferior to you it doesn’t mean anything to us???
Not sure what you are trying to get at.
Phaedrus on December 11 at 8:16 p.m.
it is my belief that those on the left do think we are inferior and simply need to be shown the light -
Believe what you want.
Me on December 11 at 8:19 p.m.
Phaed - what I’m getting at is that you brush your insults etc back off on us. It’s the old “I’m sorry that what I said upset you” which means that I know exactly what I said and I mean it. You generalize about those on the right (drooling) and then when we challenge it you say it is our problem.
And yes that is the point - I believe what I want based on what I know and read and see and so do you and thus the differences.
Phaedrus on December 11 at 8:37 p.m.
Only if they drool. ;-)
You generalize about those on the right (drooling) and then when we challenge it you say it is our problem.
Me you must have missed the winky face. Unlike your direct charge about what you perceive to be “he elitism that is the left”, I never mentioned which political party is indicated by drooling; it appears that you assumed and I have no control over your assumptions.
Me on December 11 at 8:52 p.m.
Yes - you are correct Phaed - I’m too dumb to get some of your stuff.. Sometimes when I read it my brain just locks up like a computer and I have to reboot.
;)~

I know what Trish is saying, and I agree 100%. They don’t seem to be very deep thinkers, any one of them.
hhuseland on December 11 at 9:15 p.m.
I find it interesting that the pot is calling thekettle black, as the saying that reflects the ultimate double stand goes. (that will probably get me a raqcist tag, even though the old saw reffers to cast iron cookware.)
Coincidentally< I just wrote a post on civility and thae lacdk thereof in my new blog, called Kootenai county
Joker on December 11 at 9:15 p.m.
The country is traditionally slightly right of center on the political spectrum. Liberals hate that fact. Drives. Them. Crazy.
spokelooneh on December 11 at 9:17 p.m.
Trish nails it.
Some people think “Wow, just wow” (repeatedly) is intelligent commentary. So sad for them.
hhuseland on December 11 at 9:18 p.m.
Well, so much for my forgotten skill at html. Anyway, it’s
kootenaicounty.blogspot.com.
Phaedrus on December 11 at 9:18 p.m.
Me, i see why some have accused you of having a chip on your shoulder, it is in every one of your responses. Believe what you want, I don’t care, but your droning on and on about it doesn’t exactly make your point for you. You’re starting to sound like Digger.
spokelooneh on December 11 at 9:20 p.m.
Herb, you haven’t had to use HTML embed code in this blog for, oh, I dunno, about a year now. In fact it doesn’t work here. Just a tip for ya.
Phaedrus on December 11 at 9:20 p.m.
Why is that? —Trish
You live in Bonner County.
spokelooneh on December 11 at 9:21 p.m.
I see ya got it, Herb, good on ya.
spokelooneh on December 11 at 9:26 p.m.
Actually the populace and leadership switches between leaning right and leaning left, and has done so for at least a hundred years.
Not that that matters much.
hhuseland on December 11 at 9:29 p.m.
Actually, I didn’t. My other blog is so new, I forgot it’s name. So I’m going to practice my html even though it isn’t necessary. Try this:<kootenai country=”“>
hhuseland on December 11 at 9:31 p.m.
Oh well, I got close, but no cigar. anyway, Kootenai Country is my new blog. I created it because Bayviews even though popular, is somewhat local, and when I want to spout off on regional or national issues, I thought it best to enlarge the scope, ergo, Kootenai country. Or using modern technology, www.kootenaicountry.com
hhuseland on December 11 at 9:36 p.m.
Well, I think I am proving Trish’s point here. When I click on the above, I get this:http://www.kootenairiverrealty.com/. So anyway, If you aren’t bored stiff over this by now, just type it in yourselves, ignore it or what the hell, it’s almost bedtime anyway.
Sisyphus on December 12 at 9:15 a.m.
I see the right bank members are still missing their mirrors. But beyond that I certainly can see where providing facts which contradict stated opinions from the right bank can lead to the criticism that we’re arrogant know it alls. When some members daily repeat criticisms against the left, Democrats, and Obama which are largely repeated from right wing disinformations site, without employing any skepticism or critical thought, one can perceive an air of condescension in the refutation.
Republicans employing this ‘elitist’ criticism hope to capture a ‘common man’ standard for themselves in their binary dualistic and very Orwellian paradigms they like to frame things. But its counterintuitive because they consistently attack education, science and knowledge in the process as somehow bad and that those utilizing these attributes are not to be trusted. Its frustrating to engage in dialogue when that is the premise. Embracing ignorance can never lead to salvation for the political issues facing the country.
I’m the son of a dirt farmer from the deserts of southern Idaho who scratched and clawed his way to a living. 100% of my education was provided in Idaho. I’m proud of these facts particularly when I can buck someone’s ridiculous stereotype based upon them. But whether I’m shopping for a president, evaluating a tax structure, or determining whether climate change is endangering the planet, of course I’m going to listen to people whose credentials are impressive enough that I’d want my kids to have them. This elitist tag Republicans use with relish actually supports Trish’s assertion rather than being a response to it.
Then again there’s always the evidence.

Arpie on December 12 at 9:28 a.m.
I have often found the same thing as Trish. I figure it’s reflection of where I live. I think that someone who lived in an area with a large percentage of Democrats would find that the dumb people they met would all be Democrats following the majority view that surrounds them.
There are many smart Republicans I respect. I can always listen to Newt Gingrich for example. But the world seems filled with sheep. That’s what a picture in the Bee reminded me of. People lined up in a maze to see Sarah- Sheep to slaughter.
Arch_Druid on December 12 at 9:48 a.m.
Me, there’s a little problem with all that personal whining any time that a guy like Phaedrus points out the obvious. Methinks you doth protest too much.
Now, quite beyond the “education” as to where currently highly influential people went to a university and graduated, someone can be called “elitist” for having at their command certain facts that the name caller could have easily researched for him/or herself. The very fact that the name caller doesn’t choose to DEMONSTRATES willful ignorance. And upon presenting contrary facts to the individual who rests his/her entire political premise on a specific ideology or special interest agenda; ultimately this is an individual who immediately WANTS to feel inferior, play the VICTIM card and ends up proving exactly why Trish can make the arguments that she does!
It’s actually not hard to do a little thinking and demonstrate some intelligence when trotting out your chosen politics and ideology. Cabbage Boy is one of a few who do. So, I’d can feeling “insulted” on this issue. Otherwise, if the shoe fits, wear it.
hmoffsuite on December 12 at 10:02 a.m.
Sis >> “When some members daily repeat criticisms against the left, Democrats, and Obama which are largely repeated from right wing disinformations site, without employing any skepticism or critical thought,”
That sounds highly judgemental. Your view is the only right one and all else are not capable of giving the issues fair consideration? That is where you become elitist. ONLY you are right. And, of course, all of YOUR left wing disinformation sites, one of which is your blog, 43st, have indeed provided skepticism and critical thought? I happen to think you liberals are more susceptible to ‘group think’ and lacking critical thought than we conservatives. Its just a matter of having differences of opinion on matters. But don’t think that because we see issues differently, we lack critical thinking. Our critical thinking simply gives us a different result than yours. Not inferior, just different.
Me on December 12 at 10:09 a.m.
I have no feelings of being insulted, a victim, or inferior at all Arch - not at all. I was simply stating some of my observations of things I’ve seen and read on this site - but I do not take any of it personally. I know who I am.
Arch_Druid on December 12 at 10:16 a.m.
Hmoffsuite, you just demonstrated an elitism that you attack in others. Care to re-read your post?
And by the way, what would make you “conservative?”
moscow_minidoka on December 12 at 10:22 a.m.
Having lived for several years in Seattle, I think I must agree with Arpie - there are more stupid Republicans in North Idaho because there are more Republicans, period.
I met quite a few stupid Democrats when I lived in Seattle. Hmoff’s head would have exploded had he met these people. They ignored evidence in just the same way, but from different cesspools of paranoia and conspiracy theories.
The common thread is that there are stupid people who are dumb as a sack of rocks and believe with the believe no matter the evidence against it. They’ve always existed - they used to think the earth was flat and that the sun revolved around the earth.
And in North Idaho, they proudly vote for people like Bill Sali and that laughingstock who is in charge of the education committee but is a vocal opponent of public education.
hmoffsuite on December 12 at 10:26 a.m.
Arch. Perhaps you would like to re-read my post. No elitism whatsoever. Just saying that because my conclusions on matters differ from others, it doesn’t demonstrate a lack of critical thinking on my part or anyone elses’, for that matter. And, btw, Arch. Where did I attack others? I’m playing defense here, not offense. Why am I ‘conservative’? It might be that I care to conserve our American values and heritage. Not CHANGE it. Stuff like capitalism and patriotism.
hmoffsuite on December 12 at 10:30 a.m.
MM. I have met and known several of those Seattle democrats, rest assured. Just take notice of what they have done to THEIR State. It’s following the path of California and will end up with the same result. A shame.
LarrySpencer on December 12 at 11:02 a.m.
Mike K thinks his followers are stupid or gullible. Read the story he posted about Lee Shelman now that Lee can’t come back from the grave to defend his reputation.
Arch_Druid on December 12 at 11:17 a.m.
When confronted with the charge of elitism, go into denial right Hmoffsuite? LOL!.
Now to define America’s values and heritage. What should be valued first and foremost is the U.S. Constitution. No, it is not a “Christian” document. No it is not “biblically based.” To make that argument is to entirely change a fundamental fact about this nation as to what exactly it is founded upon. It is a secular document that attempts to thwart tyranny and the obvious abuses of those in power. However, Hmoffsuite, when you were facing the abuses of those in power during the last administration, did you value the U.S. Constitution enough to publicly argue against it or did you value the party more?
Next to define America’s heritage. America’s heritage is that of constant change. Yes, this country had black periods in all of its history but because people were free to change their minds about what was regarded as the social norm at the time such as slavery, for example; then yes, they sought to change it. Only through change is it possible to improve a country and its society. To argue against change if it may benefit my neighbor isn’t a “conservative” position to take. To argue for change if it is beneficial to my special interest agenda (that results in a gvt intervention) isn’t a “conservative” position to take either. Because in either case, you don’t argue from a moral perspective. The latter being hypocritical.
Define patriot. If you use being “patriotic” to attack others for their beliefs, then you don’t understand the meaning of the term. Patriotism defends a nation! And in a pluralistic nation such as this, you do not pick and choose who to defend regardless of their faults and who to oppose, especially because of their faults. You defend everyone. As a military veteran, I understand that.
Now again, Hmoffsuite, what would make you “conservative?”
Cindy_H on December 12 at 7:23 p.m.
As to the original question:
When my office mate and I were moving into our new space she noticed an Obama sticker on the window.
“Gross!” she said. And peeled it off.
I assumed she was a conservative Republican.
Wrong.
Turns out she just hates stickers on windows.
First impressions can prove very wrong.
Cindy_H on December 12 at 7:25 p.m.
And btw, Phaedrus when I meet someone and they drool, I pretty much assume they’re straight and they are male.
Your experiences must differ.
Just saying ;-)
richard on December 14 at 8:39 a.m.
Hmoff - My advice would be to just not respond to Druid. She has “dogged” me for months on other threads. Ignore her and eventually she will take her muddled thinking and find someone else to attack.
