Huckleberries Online

Hump Day Wild Card — 12.16.09

Huckleberries Online should reach 2M page-views sometime tonight. The blog enters the day with 1,991,872 page-views and 1,113,937 unique views. As of 6 o’clock tonight, the blog was 1,669 page-views away from the goal. As you know, I didn’t think HBO would reach this plateau this year after the rough start at the beginning of the year, caused by a switch to a new software system. However, except for the inability to use HTML in the comments section, the new software has proven superior to the old system. So it’s all good. As always, thanks for being part of this long, wacky ride. Now, for your Wild Card …

I was responsible for views 1,991,863 through 1,991,877. Glad to do my part, Dave. Good stuff.

I posted an update to my ‘Yogi’ thread of yesterday. Thank you all for your support. :~)

So what does the 2 millionth comment win DFO??? Will balloons and confetti drop??? Do we win a new avatar, or what…?

@ Bent re: “So what does the 2 millionth comment win DFO??? Will balloons and confetti drop???”

I think it means that I get to keep this job for another year and that the company will pop again for the soda and pizza, at the 6th annual blogfest in February.

hmmm… I’m happy to hear that another blogfest is planned. But the Hoffman/Gookin theory of economics would suggest to the SR that “recognition” is not a legitimate business expense. Yea, yea, I hear them howling that there’s a difference between private industry finance and tax funds. But I say that the “city” is a business, not a clutch of volunteers. And recognition is a time-honored way to foster morale. So, I’ll attempt to be humble and gracious as I accept my pizza; and I’ll spring for some suds for the blogmeister.

Hey Hucksters, just wanted to let you know that after meeting an awesome blurker via the front-page DFO was kind enuff to put out yesterday re: my financial aid stress, I am now past that hurdle, having filled out the necessary evil paperwork with wise eyes looking on.
Not only that, but through Sara and her super-nice colleagues at the Alumni Office at NIC (who normally do not deal with greenie frosh like me!) I’ve learned that I may not have to relocate to Boise to attend BSU after all… I can get double bachelors and even MASTERS up here thru LCSC and satellite branches of U of I, BSU and even a couple others! All brand new news to me.
So once again I’ve learned there ARE no stupid questions, and with the kindness of the online community, I’ve gotten one or two steps further down the road toward my goal.
Thanks guys! (and gals!) Here’s one happy student, heading once more through the slush and muck to go get a parking permit and sign yet ONE MORE piece of paperwork down at the college. Grinning ear to ear, though.

    Perhaps he is partially right

    <obama repeated=”” his=”” demand=”” for=”” action,=”” telling=”” abc=”” news=”” “the=”” federal=”” government=”” will=”” go=”” bankrupt”=”” if=”” the=”” health=”” care=”” bill=”“ fails.=”“>

If he were to leave off the “if the bill fails” and just say “if I continue on this path”.

  • Stickman on December 16 at 3:45 p.m.

I like the idea of another blogfest, and hopefully all the ones in the past who have avoided it will come. It’s a great event, and lets you meet the ones you talk to each day. Unless that bothers you of course.

  • hmoffsuite on December 16 at 3:48 p.m.

Phaedrus. I know you guys hate Beck almost as much as Palin. I’ve learned to deal with that. But, Beck does have good sources and research. He broke the acorn scandel (proven true) and Van Jones (proven true). Now, here is the item of the day. It seems that Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska, who is not exactly getting on board with Obama on the health reform bill, and who has a major strategic Air Force base in his State has been told by the Obama administration that if he doesn’t get on board, the AFB would be put on the ‘closure list’ of military bases. Now, if this proves to be a true item, wouldn’t you agree that this is despicable? Blackmail for health care support? And, while I am here, what’s with John Dean bailing on the health care bill?

  • spokelooneh on December 16 at 6:24 p.m.

A single unnamed source forms the basis for this smear by Goldfarb, a serial liar and admitted partisan journalist. Neither the President or DoD gets to put military bases on the BRAC list. I see every right wing nut in the media is now repeating this baseless smear from John McCain’s former communications guy.

  • hmoffsuite on December 16 at 7:15 p.m.

Spoke >> ” Neither the President or DoD gets to put military bases on the BRAC list”

Existing laws, rules and protocols are meaningless with this administration. If the laws aren’t convenient for the administration agenda, they just change the laws. Make new rules. Who said they could set executive pay in our system? Who said they could take over GM, AIG and other institutions? The dems have total control in congress and are not unwilling to abuse the power. As to the Senator Nelson matter, the facts may or may not emerge. If this story is true, rest assured that it will be swept under the carpet. We’ll have to watch how this one plays out, just like acorn and all the rest.

  • DFO on December 16 at 7:30 p.m.

    7:29 p.m. : 519 page-views to go to hit 2 million. Whoot-whoo.

  • hmoffsuite on December 16 at 7:35 p.m.

DFO. I would be curious to learn of the growth pattern in hits. How many last year? Year before? And before that? In other words, what does the curve look like?

  • Bent on December 16 at 8:07 p.m.

This guy is obviously asking for it, but he is no different than Michael Moore …. and I know this is FOX, but it is just so dang ugly (both ways) that I had to link it …

Hmo, after posting big gains HBO peaked a couple years ago. It’s been level or going slightly downhill for awhile now. Typical Internet pattern.

  • hhuseland on December 16 at 8:14 p.m.

Perhaps you could convince the powers that be to install a counter so that we bottom feeders could follow your smashing success.

  • spokelooneh on December 16 at 8:16 p.m.

HMOffsuite, try and stick to the issue.

There will be NO way of EVER determining the validity of Goldfarb’s smear, UNLESS a named source in position to know comes forward.

Absent that, it’s pure smear, which is now being parroted by every right wing nutcase in the media.

    Goldfarb is not credible.

It’s along the lines of “have you stopped beating your wife?”

  • DFO on December 16 at 10:03 p.m.

@ HMO; HBO has increased page-views every year since the beginning in 2004. In cracked 2M for the first time 3 years ago, at 2.1M. It hit 2.25M 2 years ago, and 2.55M last year. Last December, the SR switched over to a new system that wiped out a good percentage of the regulars who initially didn’t follow the blog to the new site as well as search engine traffic. Immediately, my blog numbers dropped by 40%. The recovery began in mid-spring and continued through the summer. This fall, the traffic numbers would reach 3 million, if spread over an entire year. This, despite a extra week of time off as a result of the newspaper furloughs. I’m delighted with the recovery numbers for the year, and I look forward to the recovered numbers over a full year next year.

  • DFO on December 16 at 10:06 p.m.

BTW, the page-view traffic for the year now stands 2,000,230. Huzzah!

  • spokelooneh on December 16 at 10:59 p.m.

Congrats, DFO, and you should also be thanking Gookin, Brannon, and the CAVErs for making it an interesting election.

  • DFO on December 16 at 11:58 p.m.

@ Spoke re: “Congrats, DFO, and you should also be thanking Gookin, Brannon, and the CAVErs for making it an interesting election.”

Gookin, Brannon, Mary, Bill & the CAVErs are among my favorite people in town. Dunno how HBO would make it without them. They play the Washington Generals to HBO’s Harlem Globetrotters. The “Star Wars” storm troopers to HBO’s Luke, Leia, Hans, Chewy, and the Jedis. Wiley Coyote to HBO’s Roadrunner. They’re indispensible. But don’t forget Sarah Palin when you’re handing out awards for Best Supporting Thread Starters.
